On August 17, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible stolen CashApp debit card. The victim reported locking the card and disconnecting the linked bank account.
Shortly after, the victim received notification of an attempted use at a local business. Deputies were able to obtain video surveillance of the subject that had attempted to use it.
The Criminal Investigations Division was able to identify the male subject as Joshua Matthew Varner. On August 30, 2023, charges were sought against Varner for felony financial card theft, felony identity theft, and felony attempt to obtain property by false pretense.
On September 1, 2023, the Criminal Apprehension Team located, arrested, and transported Varner to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was served the outstanding warrant. The magistrate issued a $3,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for September 5, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
