On June 20, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Zoo Parkway, Asheboro, in reference to a suspicious vehicle. Upon arrival, deputies located the vehicle on the right shoulder of Zoo Parkway with a male subject standing near the front passenger side of the vehicle and a female in the passenger seat. The deputy had to turn around to get behind the vehicle, but the suspect vehicle had also turned around and was headed back toward the deputy. The deputy stopped in the roadway and the male subject in the suspect vehicle pulled up beside the deputy and stated the car was having mechanical issues. The deputy recognized the driver as Charles Anthony Cox and asked him to pull into Rainbow Loop Road. Cox then rapidly accelerated the vehicle and passed Rainbow Loop Rd, and continued travel east on Zoo Parkway. The deputy initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle but Cox continued to accelerate in speed. Upon approaching Happy Hollow Road, Cox stopped on the shoulder of the road and the female passenger exited. The driver then rapidly accelerated again on Zoo Parkway but jumped a ditch and drove into pasture. The deputy went to the intersection of Happy Hollow Rd. and Zoo Parkway to see if the vehicle would come back out on either of the roads. The female that exited the vehicle earlier, was located walking down Happy Hollow Rd. and contact was made with her. She was detained and identified as Stephanie Renee Caviness.
Additional deputies arrived and located the vehicle in the pasture, but did not locate Cox, who had eleven active warrants for his arrest. Crime Scene investigations responded, processed the vehicle, and collected evidence. A large amount of copper telephone and internet cable was located in the back seat and tools that had been used were in the trunk of the vehicle.
Another deputy spoke with the original caller who advised that a white female was driving the suspicious vehicle and dropped off the male at the intersection of 220 S. and Zoo Parkway. The female was seen driving up and down the road several times while the caller could hear a saw of some kind running in the area where the male had walked into the woods.
A CenturyLink rep responded and advised they had located where 200’ of telephone and internet cable had been cut down and stolen.
Caviness was placed under arrest and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for charges of felony larceny and felony possession of stolen goods. The magistrate issued a $5,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for June 26, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
Warrants were obtained on Cox for felony larceny, felony possession stolen goods, felony flee to elude arrest with motor vehicle, misdemeanor injury to real property, and misdemeanor resisting public officer.
