On January 11, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Wright Road in Thomasville for an assault that occurred at a different location. Upon arrival, deputies met with the caller who reported that James Aaron Sheffield had assaulted her. Deputies escorted the female back to the address where the incident occurred to retrieve personal items and for the deputies to speak with Sheffield.
Upon arrival, deputies located Sheffield and arrested him without further incident. While speaking with Sheffield, deputies noticed he also had visible signs of an assault and was questioned further about the incident. The female, Ashley Nicole Helton, was then also arrested. Both were then transported to the Randolph County Detention Center and taken before the magistrate, who found probable cause on Sheffield for felony assault by strangulation and misdemeanor assault on a female. The magistrate found probable cause for felony assault by strangulation and misdemeanor simple assault against Helton. No bond was given to either since the charges were domestic in nature. A first appearance was set for both for January 12, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
