On December 24, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Pilot Mountain Road in Asheboro in reference to an assault that had already occurred. Upon arrival, deputies gathered information and investigated the incident. The victim reported that the assailant, identified as Christine Faye Leonhardt, had left the scene with the victim’s dog following the assault. A short time later, another call from a third party to 911 advised that the female suspect was now sitting on a neighbor's porch. Deputies located her still holding the dog. She was placed under arrest for the theft of the dog. She was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center and taken before the magistrate. The magistrate found probable cause for felony larceny of a dog, misdemeanor simple assault, and misdemeanor communicating threats. No bond was issued due to Leonhardt being out on pre-trial release for other charges. A first appearance was set for December 30, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
