In January of 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) received a report of a possible sex offense upon an unknown minor (or minors), which occurred in 2005 in Randolph County.
The initial offense was reported to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office following an investigation conducted by the Moore County Sheriff’s Office and the NC State Bureau of Investigations (NCSBI).
The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office and the NCSBI initiated an investigation into the allegations, which involved a prior Randolph County School system employee, who was last employed with the school system on June 15, 2006, and an unknown juvenile victim. After completing an investigation and identifying the victim, RCSO Detectives sought charges against Gregory Winton Simmons for three counts of felony sex offense with a student.
On November 25, 2024, Simmons was located in Moore County, arrested, and transported to the Moore County Detention Center, where he was served the warrant. The magistrate issued a $500,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for November 27, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
