On September 14, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office observed a vehicle matching the description of one that had fled from an area agency earlier in the evening traveling north on S. Fayetteville St., Asheboro. The vehicle sped up and made a right onto E. Beasley St. Upon approach to the intersection of E. Beasley St. and Old Liberty Rd., the deputy observed the suspect vehicle parked between a camper and the wood line. As the alley lights illuminated the vehicle, the male driver exited, fled on foot, and a pursuit began.
After a brief foot chase, the male was apprehended and identified as Jameal Shufon Matthews. During the search to arrest, an illegal substance and paraphernalia were located. Matthews was then transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for charges of felony possession of Schedule II controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor resist/delay/obstruct, misdemeanor assault on a government official, and driving while license revoked. Matthews was held without bond due to pending charges. A first appearance was set for September 16, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
