On September 10, 2024, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Deputies patrolling the the area of US Hwy 220 Bus. S. heard an ATV traveling northbound on US Hwy 220 Bus. S. at a high rate of speed. The ATV was soon observed sitting on the shoulder of the road near Dragon Fly Lane. The deputy activated the emergency lights while pulling behind the ATV. The driver of the ATV, later identified as Eric Lindsey King, performed a U-turn across US Hwy 220 Business and headed south fleeing from the investigation, driving into the opposite travel lane, nearly missing the front end of another patrol vehicle. The pursuit continued a short distance until he pulled to the shoulder and patrol vehicles were used to block the ATV from movement. King was ordered to dismount the ATV but refused several times and was assisted off of the ATV. The odor of alcohol was present. NC State Highway responded to conduct a field sobriety test but King declined. He was arrested for Driving While Impaired and other traffic violations and was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center for processing while a deputy waited for a towing company.
The deputy responded to the Detention Center and went before the magistrate seeking additional charges against King for felony fleeing to elude arrest and misdemeanor resisting a public officer. The magistrate found probable cause for the charges and issued a warrant for arrest and King was served. He was issued a $1,000 secured bond for these charges and a court date was set for September 16, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
