On February 27, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop on I-73/74 at US Hwy 64, Asheboro. The driver, identified as Robert William Smith, did not possess a valid driver’s license. During the investigative stop, Smith produced illegal substances and paraphernalia and was detained for further investigation.
Following a subsequent search, Smith was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for felony possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver methamphetamine, felony possession with intent to sell/deliver counterfeit controlled substance, felony maintain vehicle/dwelling/place for controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia, misdemeanor possession of marijuana less than a half ounce, and misdemeanor driving while license revoked. He was issued a $20,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for February 27, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
