On February 13, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop on US Hwy 311, Sophia. The driver was identified as William Henry Jones, II., who has a suspended license. While the deputy was speaking with Jones, he drove away, fleeing from the traffic stop. Jones drove off the right side of the roadway and through a ditch to avoid another vehicle that was blocking his lane of travel. A deputy was able to block further advancement of Jones’ vehicle with his patrol vehicle where Jones was reentering the roadway. Jones then complied with commands and exited his vehicle. During a subsequent search, illegal substances and a firearm were located. Jones is a convicted felon. He was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for felony possession of a firearm by a felon, felony possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana, felony maintaining vehicle/dwelling/place for controlled substance, felony possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver Cocaine, misdemeanor resisting public officer, misdemeanor driving while license revoked - not impaired revoked, misdemeanor carrying a concealed gun, misdemeanor flee/elude arrest w/motor vehicle, and fail to maintain lane control. Jones was not given a bond due to being out on bond for a previous charge. A first appearance was set for February 14, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
