On August 10, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a motor vehicle theft. The victim reported evenly trading a motorcycle for another vehicle with Donna Beatrice Reed and Dayton Lee Reed, Jr. When the victim went to get the vehicle inspected, it was discovered that the VIN number had been tampered with. During the investigation, it was determined that the vehicle was stolen out of Davie County and painted. Through the investigation, Detectives learned that the two suspects obtained and attached a fraudulent VIN prior to trading.
On August 17, 2023, Detectives received information that the 2016 Harley Davidson Street Glide was located at exit 86 of I-73 South in Level Cross. Detectives in the area located the motorcycle and confirmed the VIN to be the motorcycle that was fraudulently obtained. The motorcycle was recovered and returned to the victim.
The magistrate found probable cause for charges of felony possession of a stolen vehicle and felony obtaining property by false pretenses and a warrant was issued for the arrest of the two suspects.
On August 20, 2023, the subjects were located and arrested in Virginia. They were extradited to Randolph County on August 28, 2023, and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where they were served their outstanding warrants.
Dayton Lee Reed, Jr. was also served an outstanding warrant out of Guilford County for felony larceny and felony possession of stolen goods/property and an order for arrest for a true bill of indictment out of Rockingham County. He was issued a $22,500 total secured bond.
Donna Beatrice Reed was issued a $5,000 secured bond.
A first appearance was set for August 29, 2023, in Randolph County District Court for both.
