[ARCHIVED] Thompson, Jesse Lee and Hurley, Summer Rose

thompson and hurley

On May 14, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Westwood Dr., Seagrove, in reference to a welfare check request on two occupants that appeared to be unconscious in a vehicle.  Upon arrival and approach to the vehicle, the deputy observed the subjects identified as Jesse Lee Thompson and Summer Rose Hurley in the vehicle.  Fire personnel also arrived.  The deputy and fire personnel knocked on the car windows multiple times. When the driver, Thompson, finally awoke, he sat up, started the vehicle and fled the scene.  Randolph County Communications and other deputies in the area of his direction were notified that Thompson was fleeing the scene in the vehicle. Communications verified that the passenger, Hurley, had outstanding felony orders for arrest.

The responding deputy attempted to catch up to the fleeing vehicle.  Another deputy encountered the vehicle on Little River Road and attempted a traffic stop.  However, Thompson refused to stop and a vehicle pursuit ensued.  The driver pointed a gun out of the window toward deputies multiple times during the pursuit.  Additional Montgomery County deputies responded to the expected area of the pursuit to assist.    While the fleeing vehicle traveled southbound on Hwy 134, Thompson swerved into the northbound lane of a responding northbound Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, attempting to run him of the roadway and brandishing the gun out of the window at the oncoming deputy.

When approaching the city limits of Troy, assisting deputies attempted to deploy a tire deflation device but Thompson avoided them and the pursuit continued toward Hwy 109 and into Stanly County onto Hwy 24.

Stanly County Deputies attempted to deploy a tire deflation device near Stoney Gap Road but were unsuccessful and the vehicle cut through a ditch and made a left on Stoney Gap Rd.  Just prior to Southside Road, the subject jammed on the vehicle brakes nearly coming to a stop, intentionally causing a collision with a pursuing patrol vehicle. The vehicles then separated for a brief time and then contact was made again due to the subject again jamming on the brakes. This time, the deputy continued contact with the vehicle's rear bumper causing the vehicle to lose control and ultimately come to a stop in a ditch on the driver’s side. The occupants were instructed to exit the vehicle. Thompson and Hurley eventually exited the vehicle on the passenger side. After multiple commands, Thompson was taken into custody. The female stood on top of the vehicle and began yelling explicative language at Deputies and Officers. She also began to place narcotics in her mouth and swallow them. The female was then pulled from the top passenger side of the vehicle down to the ground and taken into custody. While the female was being taken to a patrol vehicle she spit in the face of a Albemarle Police Officer, who had assisted in the pursuit while in their jurisdiction.

During a search of the vehicle, a BB handgun with identical design to a Berretta M9, was located and secured.

Hurley was transported by EMS to an area hospital for evaluation and a deputy remained with her until her release when she was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center.

Thompson was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where the magistrate found probable cause for the charges of two counts of felony assault on LEO with firearm, felony flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, misdemeanor resisting public officer, and misdemeanor reckless driving with wanton disregard.  Thompson was given a secured $150,000 bond.

Hurley was served her active orders for arrest for failure to appear on felonies. She was served new warrant for arrest from Albemarle Police Department for malicious conduct by a prisoner. Probable cause was found for felony destroy criminal evidence. She was issued a $60,000 total secured bond.

A first appearance was set for both for May 15, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
