On November 10, 2022, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to US 220 Bus. S., Asheboro, in reference to a larceny. Upon arrival, the victim reported an unknown white male suspect entered the property and drove to the rear of the business during the early morning hours and stole items. Surveillance footage was captured of the vehicle and the displayed registration plate. The male subject then left the property at approximately 2 am. Evidence was collected and provided to the Criminal Investigations Division.
On November 11, 2022, the victim reported finding photos of the ladders for sale on Facebook marketplace with the same van and registration plate in the background.
Later in the same day, the victim was working in the Jamestown area and saw the vehicle in the parking lot of a Lowes Food. The victim contacted High Point Police Department and officers responded to further investigate. The victim took pictures of the van and a male and female who were arrested on drug charges. The male was the same person captured on the security footage. The ladders were not in the van.
Detectives contacted High Point Police Department to obtain the offenders’ information who were arrested in the incident. The male was identified as Scott Allen Bentley, who also had outstanding warrants.
On November 15, 2022, detectives went to attempt to locate Bentley at the last known address. Upon arrival, they spoke with other residents and were able to locate some of the items stolen on November 10th. Those items were returned to the victim. A warrant was sought on Bentley for felony larceny and felony possession of stolen goods. However, efforts to locate Bentley had been unfruitful.
On January 1, 2023, Bentley was sentenced on charges out of Guilford County and confined at Johnston Correctional Center. On May 8, 2023, Bentley was released and brought to the Randolph County Detention Center from Johnston Correctional Center to be served with the warrant. The magistrate issued a written promise to appear on May 15, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
