On February 20, 2026, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Team Urban Unit observed a careless and reckless motorist and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Hwy 64 W., in Asheboro. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop, and a chase ensued. After a short distance, the vehicle came to a stop in the area of 64 W. and Gallimore Town Rd. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Gary Wayne Woodard. Patrol Units and North Carolina State Highway Patrol Troopers responded to assist.
After further investigation, a subsequent search was conducted, and fentanyl, paraphernalia, and ammunition were located.
Woodard was placed into custody and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where the magistrate found probable cause for felony possession of fentanyl, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor flee to elude arrest, misdemeanor reckless driving to endanger, misdemeanor driving while license revoked, misdemeanor no liability insurance, misdemeanor give/lend/borrow a license plate, following too closely, and unsafe passing. Due to the NC pre-trial integrity act, Woodard was ineligible to receive a bond at this time. A first appearance was set for February 23, 2026, in Randolph County District Court.
