On August 22, 2025, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office was conducting a multi-agency DWI checkpoint on Highway 64 in Franklinville. A vehicle turned around at Lakeside Park Rd. prior to approaching the checkpoint. An officer left his stationary position to initiate a traffic stop. The driver was observed turning onto Allie Ln., a dead-end road, at a high rate of speed, where he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Upon their arrival, officers cleared the vehicle and requested a K9 to respond to the scene. During the course of the K9 track, items were located throughout the woods that were identified as personal property of Jameal Shufon Matthews.
Charges were sought against Matthews for felony flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle and resisting a public officer. The magistrate found probable cause and issued a warrant for arrest.
On September 4, 2025, the Criminal Interdiction Team Detectives, with the assistance of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections, took Matthews into custody. He was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where the magistrate issued a $5,000 secured bond. A first appearance was set for September 5, 2025, in Randolph County District Court.
