On September 9, 2025, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on Jordan Rd., Ramseur, but the vehicle failed to stop, sped up, and continued eastbound on Hwy 64 at a high rate of speed. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and Siler City Police Department were notified that the speeding vehicle was approaching their jurisdiction. Randolph County’s pursuit was canceled upon entering the city limits. Shortly after, Communications advised that the Siler City Police Department and Chatham County Sheriff's Office had stopped the vehicle, and the occupants were detained at 1322 E 11th St.
Upon arrival at the scene, Wendell Lamont Newton was identified as the driver, placed under arrest, and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where the magistrate found probable cause for felony flee/elude arrest with motor vehicle, speeding, expired registration card/tag, reckless driving-wanton disregard, and driving while license revoked. Wendell also had a pickup order on his license, so that was seized as well. Hel was issued a $25,000 secured bond, and his first appearance was set for September 12, 2025, in Randolph County District Court.
