On May 24, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on I-73/74, just north of exit 108 in Asheboro. At that moment, the offender accelerated and cut off another vehicle, nearly resulting in a collision. The offender continued traveling north, committing multiple traffic violations. After driving approximately 50 yards on Main St. in Archdale, the offender made an abrupt U-turn in the middle of the roadway to go back southbound and proceeded to steer directly towards the patrol vehicle, colliding with it head-on. The driver then slid over to the passenger side of his vehicle in an effort to flee on foot, but was unable to open the car door. The deputy exited the patrol vehicle, issuing loud verbal commands, and subsequently arrested the driver, who was later identified as Rolando Mareno.
He was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, where the magistrate found probable cause for felony flee/elude arrest with motor vehicle, felony assault physical injury to law enforcement, misdemeanor speeding, misdemeanor reckless driving -wanton disregard, two counts fail to stop-steady red light, following too closely and unsafe movement and issued a $25,000 secured bond. A first appearance was set for May 27, 2025, in Randolph County District Court.
