On June 9, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on Woods Dairy Rd., Denton. The driver of the motorcycle failed to stop and began to flee at a high rate of speed passing another vehicle on a double yellow line. The deputy did not proceed due to the safety of other vehicles in the area. The driver of the motorcycle was identified as Derek Andrew Benfield. Charges were sought against him for felony flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle, misdemeanor driving while license revoked – not impaired, misdemeanor fictitious/altered title/registration card/tag, misdemeanor no motorcycle endorsement, misdemeanor reckless driving – wanton disregard, and unsafe passing yellow line. The magistrate found probable cause for the charges and issued a warrant for arrest.
On February 16, 2025, Benfield was located in Davidson County, arrested, and transported to the Davidson County Detention Center where he was served his warrant. He was issued no bond and his first appearance was set for February 17, 2025, in Davidson County District Court. A court date has been set for March 31, 2025, in Randolph County District Court.
