On February 5, 2025, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle accident on Old Liberty Rd., Franklinville. Upon arrival, the deputy observed a vehicle engulfed in flames, a power line down in the middle of the road, and multiple small fires throughout the grass on the sides of the road. The driver of the vehicle had fled the scene. While waiting for fire personnel to contain the fires, information was received that the vehicle involved in the accident was the suspect vehicle of a hit and run that had occurred in Asheboro city limits just prior. NC State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) arrived on the scene and took over the wreck investigation. While completing an inventory of the vehicle to be towed, narcotics and paraphernalia were located. A K9 was requested to perform a track of the driver who had fled the scene, locating him in the surrounding wooded area. The suspect was identified as Michael Hugh Wood of Durham. EMS responded to evaluate Wood. EMS cleared him, but Wood chose to be transported to Randolph Health.
Wood was charged on a citation by NCSHP for impaired driving.
Charges were sought and the magistrate found probable cause to issue a warrant for felony possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, felony maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
On February 7, 2025, Wood was located, arrested, and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center. The magistrate issued a $1,000 secured bond, and a first appearance was set for February 10, 2025, in Randolph County District Court.
