On March 16, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Red Cross Rd., Julian, in reference to larceny of a motor vehicle and a license plate from another vehicle on the property. Video surveillance was obtained, and the suspect was identified as William Clyde Clontz. Later in the day, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office advised they had located that vehicle, containing the additional license plate, on West Perry Rd. in their jurisdiction before it had been reported stolen in Randolph County. They also provided information regarding an encounter with Clontz in the same area at around 3:00 am, before locating the vehicle.
Charges were sought against Clontz and the magistrate found probable cause for felony larceny of motor vehicle and felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle and issued a warrant.
On May 12, 2024, Clonz was located by Liberty Police Department in their jurisdiction. He was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was served the warrant and issued a $3,000 secured bond. A first appearance was set for May 13, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
