On May 3, 2024, an alert out of York County, South Carolina, was given to agencies in the area regarding homicide suspects who had fled South Carolina traveling north on I-85 and were believed to be in the area of exit 91.
Randolph County Sheriff’s Office deputies and other agencies in the vicinity began attempting to locate the vehicle. Within a few minutes, a black vehicle with a South Carolina plate was observed traveling in the center lane, and a North Carolina State Highway Patrol vehicle was close behind. Deputies joined the Trooper, who then initiated a traffic stop. A Thomasville Police Officer also responded for additional support. The subjects, identified as Mitchell Charles Strickland and Shelby Jeanette Strickland, obeyed the commands given and were detained for further investigation. During a subsequent search of the vehicle for towing, firearms were located.
An additional deputy went before the magistrate with the information provided by the investigating agency in South Carolina and obtained a warrant for arrest for fugitive on both Striklands. They were then placed under arrest on scene, transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, taken before the magistrate, and served their warrants. They are now being held for the extradition process back to South Carolina.
