On January 22, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Hopewell Friends Rd., Asheboro, in reference to a fight in progress. Upon arrival, the deputy observed two male subjects engaged in a physical altercation at the side of the residence. One of the males, later identified as Thomas Zachary Hall, fled and a foot chase ensued with the deputy giving loud verbal commands, but the directives were ignored. The deputy eventually lost sight of Hall and attempts to locate him were unsuccessful.
During the investigation, it was discovered that Hall had stolen a four-wheeler from another victim and the property owner was attempting to stop Hall and recover the vehicle for the ATV owner. The owner arrived and Hall attempted to get back onto the ATV again. The two victims pulled Hall off the ATV and removed the key from the ignition to prevent him from driving away. Hall grabbed a nearby wooden plank and struck the windshield of the truck, causing it to shatter. Then, a physical altercation began and a witness called 911.
Deputies observed the reported damage to the vehicle and located the wooden plank allegedly used by Hall. Charges were sought against Hall for felony larceny of motor vehicle, felony possession of stolen goods, misdemeanor injury to personal property, simple assault, and misdemeanor resisting a public officer. The magistrate found probable cause to issue the warrant.
On January 23, 2024, Hall was located during a traffic stop. While attempting to restrain Hall, he began to pull away and failed to comply with directives but was secured. During the search to arrest, drug paraphernalia was located. He was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was served his outstanding warrant and issued a $5,000 secured bond. The magistrate found probable cause for additional charges of misdemeanor assault on government official, misdemeanor resisting public officer, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and was given an additional $1,000 secured bond. A first appearance was set for January 24, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
