On January 1, 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Julian Airport Rd., Liberty, in reference to a vehicle theft in progress. While en route, Randolph Communications advised that the vehicle owner had pulled the male suspect from his truck and was detaining him until deputies could arrive.
Upon arrival, deputies located them in front of the residence and took the suspect, identified as Kenneth Eugene Sports, Jr., into custody.
Following the investigation, the deputy returned to his patrol car and noticed that Sports had spat on the windows and cage of the patrol car. When he opened the door to secure Sports in his seat belt, Sports spit on the deputy. Once he was secured in his seat, he was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where the magistrate found probable cause for felony breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, felony attempted larceny, felony malicious conduct by a prisoner, and misdemeanor assault on a government official. He was issued a $50,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for January 2, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
