On December 29, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on I-73 at Vision Dr. During the encounter, deputies observed a handgun under the driver’s seat. Both occupants were ordered out of the vehicle. During a cursory search, the driver, identified as Thomas Jarrell Shoffner, who is a convicted felon, was found to be in possession of a magazine loaded with ammunition. He was placed under arrest and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center. Upon arrival at the Detention Center, Shoffner was searched again before entering. Heroin, methamphetamine, and paraphernalia were located hidden in his possession.
The magistrate found probable cause for charges of felony possession of a firearm by felon, felony possession of heroin, felony possession of methamphetamine, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was not given a bond due to having pending charges. A first appearance was set for January 2, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
