1. Who may request an absentee ballot?

Any registered Randolph County voter may request an absentee ballot, or a voter's near relative may apply on their behalf. A near relative is defined as a spouse, brother, sister, parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, stepparent, stepchild or verifiable legal guardian.

A person in possession of a Power of Attorney for an individual is not granted the authority to request an absentee ballot for the individual.

2. May I request an absentee ballot online, by phone, or by email?

State law requires that you submit a signed request. Visit the North Carolina State Board of Elections Ballot Portal to complete a request form.

3. What is the deadline for requesting an absentee ballot?

All written requests must be received in our office no later than 5 pm on the Tuesday prior to Election Day (one week before the election).

4. Do I have to submit a new absentee request for each election?

Yes. you must submit a new absentee request for each election. In even-year partisan elections, however, you may submit one absentee ballot request for both the primary and general election. The ballots will be mailed separately at the appropriate time.

5. What is the deadline for returning my voted absentee ballot?

All civilian absentee ballots must be received in our office by 5 pm on Election Day. Mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received by mail by the third day (Friday) following an election.

6. May I hand-deliver my voted absentee ballot to the Board of Elections office?

Yes, hand-delivered absentee ballots may be submitted to the Board of Elections office by 5 pm on Election Day.

7. May I hand-deliver another person's absentee ballot to the Board of Elections office?

8. Special postage notice for mail-in absentee ballots

Be sure to affix proper postage when you return your absentee balloting materials to the Randolph County Board of Elections. Please check with your postmaster to determine the proper postage amount. Some ballot return envelopes do not qualify for standard letter rates (11 ½" X 6 1/8" maximum).
