On September 5, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division began a follow-up investigation on a reported larceny/theft. The victim, Carolina Custom Homes of Burlington, informed the detective that they had sent a check to a contractor in Randolph County for payment of services. They were later contacted by a check cashing company in High Point attempting to confirm the authenticity of the check. Carolina Custom Homes then contacted the contractor and determined that he had not received the check.
Following the investigation, charges were sought against Nicklaus Warrant Nelson for Felony Identity Theft, Felony Forgery of Instrument, Felony Uttering a Forged Instrument, Felony Obtain Property by False Pretense, and Felony Conspiracy.
On September 8, 2023, Nelson was taken into custody at the Randolph County Courthouse and transported to the Randolph County Detention Center where he was served the outstanding warrant. The magistrate issued a $20,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for September 11, 2023, in Randolph County District Court.
