On May 13, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an assault that had occurred on Wright Rd., Thomasville. The victim reported being assaulted and strangled by a known assailant, identified as Yoni Hernandez Cruz. The victim reported Cruz had also taken the victim’s keys and a cell phone at the time of the assault. The deputy collected evidence for further investigation.
Following the investigation, charges were sought against Cruz for felony assault by strangulation, felony second degree kidnapping, felony common law robbery, misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, and misdemeanor assault by pointing a gun. The magistrate found probable cause and issued the warrant.
On May 24, 2023, Cruz was arrested at the Randolph County Courthouse following an appearance in District Court on another matter. He was served the outstanding warrant and taken before the magistrate, who denied bond due to the charges being domestic in nature. A first appearance on these charges was schedule for May 25, 2023 in Randolph County District Court.
